Every day in the “Morning Read-In” I hear from paid subscribers — their viewpoints and questions on the day’s most compelling stories on politics, communications, culture, and life. What about the rest of you?
Shoot me your questions for the next “My Reply” column. Ask me about anything.
President Trump’s own-the-libs agenda.
The Democratic Party’s inability to eradicate MAGA.
The corruption, the dysfunction, and the hate-baiting tactics of America’s political class. (Yes, I know one party is far worse than the other, but no there are no excuses or “whataboutism” in a health democracy.)
Ask me about country music, U.S. history, parenting, grandparenting, marrying well, living a good life, growing old, and dying well. These are some of my obsessions.
Ask me about covering the White House, chasing presidential candidates, writing books, running companies, and consulting for corporations, non-profits, and governmental agencies that need to tell their stories better. These are some of the things I did or do for a living.
Ask me about these convulsive times, when an unprecedented confluence of economic, demographic, and technological changes are complicating our lives and livelihoods — and every institution designed to help us adapt is flailing.
Ask me anything.

This is a semi-regular feature where I catch you up on the previous week’s text/video columns you may have missed:
Targeting blue state voters, Trump cracks down on protests against his deportation policies and considers slashing state funding.
How to Defeat Trump in California
Don’t take the bait, people. The surest way to embolden Trump is to be reckless and violent. The way to humiliate him is through massive and peaceful protests.
Our Collective Complicity in Murder
Why the death penalty needs to die.
If you get a chance to co-write an obituary with a person you love, take it.
Why We Should be Very, Very Scared
What the world needs now.
Palate cleanser: The circle of life and love on a Detroit campus.
That’s a lot of storytelling for free.
I need your help!
After massive growth in the first four months of the year, subscriptions to Convulsions have leveled off at about 6,500. Paid subscriptions — the fuel that keeps this buggy going — are also trending flat, which is a concern. I just started doing video columns and I plan to launch a Substack Live series this summer.
If you like what you’re reading and seeing here, please consider:

Recommending Convulsions on Substack.
Subscribing to the free content.
Subscribing to the paid content, including the daily “Morning Read-In,” the curation and conversation around compelling stories on politics, communications, culture and life.
A paid subscription is just $5/month or $50/year — and your contribution might be what it takes to keep this engine humming.
Gavin Newsom stated that he had no conversations with DJT related to the National Guard the weekend before the protests turned violent. Then DJT got out his cell phone and "proved" he had called him. Who is right? It has been reported online that 2 billion dollars worth of damage was done during the weeklong protests in LA. TWO BILLION? really? 5 Waymo cars and 1 Highway Patrol SUV? 23 businesses? No fires there....Today DJT stated that Iran did not "Make a Deal" in 60 days so Israel had a right to send bombs? Then why were talks still scheduled? Are these all LIES LIES LIES ?
How should journalists cover Executive Orders, including challenges? Attorney friend sent me this today. Another frightening example of Trump’s use of EO’s. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/jun/16/va-doctors-refuse-treat-patients
