Forty-some years ago, I leaned over my desk in Journalism Ethics at the University of Detroit and dared to flirt with the young woman sitting in front of me, the one with stunning blue eyes and a giggle that made my heart thump.
We soon started dating, Lori and I. Her mother was an assistant to the school’s vice president of academic affairs, and so occasionally, we would be recruited to help prepare reading packets for the Board of Trustees.
We’d walk to the administration building and grab an elevator to the top floor. I’d hit the red stop button. Lori would giggle. I’d steal a kiss.
Young love.
Today, I’m back on campus for my last meeting as a member of the University of Detroit Mercy Board of Trustees, completing eight years of treasured service at my alma mater. I’ll soon open my reading packet, which is online now, and think about life’s glorious circles.
Then I’ll head home and take Lori to dinner with our children and grandchildren.
